Talk Photo: Exploring Alternative Routes to Visual Storytelling
With Harry Hall
To mark the opening of The Royal Photographic Society Documentary Photography Awards exhibition, we are delighted to welcome Harry Hall, FRPS, Chair of the RPS Documentary Group, for a special Talk Photo event. Harry will share his experience of documentary photography and offer his insights into the genre.

Time: 3pm (doors 2.30pm)
Location: Upstairs in the Gallery at Oriel Colwyn
Harry began taking photographs while on mountaineering expeditions. Captivated by life in isolated villages, he began documenting the cultures and communities he encountered in remote regions. This interest led him to study for an MA in Contemporary Documentary Photography, followed by a PhD in Visual Ethnography.
His photographic projects have explored the urbanisation of nomadic communities, ancient trade routes and the Dhow trade across the Indian Ocean. More recently, he has undertaken a number of projects focusing on third-sector organisations, including foodbanks, the Salvation Army, Street Pastors and Recyk y’Bike.

In 2019, Harry joined the Documentary Group Committee, where he played a key role in developing the Documentary Awards touring exhibition. Earlier this year, he was elected Chair of the Documentary Group.
Harry’s Talk
Exploring Alternative Routes to Visual Storytelling
Drawing on examples from previous Documentary Photography Award winners alongside his own projects, Harry will explore contemporary issues and approaches within documentary photography.
He will consider the diverse visual strategies photographers use to investigate stories, communities and social issues, and how alternative approaches can shape the way documentary narratives are created and communicated.

TALK PHOTO is a regular evening social event in Oriel Colwyn’s gallery space, where invited speakers are here IN PERSON to share presentations and insights about their work or projects, with a friendly intimate audience.
Audience tickets are issued on a first come, first served basis.
