Artists outside caravan.
The Caravan Gallery is a collaboration between artists and photographers Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale to document the reality and surreality of the way we live today. It is also a mobile exhibition space and social club on wheels that engages with people and places ‘normal’ galleries might not easily reach.

Favourite themes include local distinctiveness, absurd juxtapositions, maverick enterprises and everyday creativity. Some images are laugh out loud funny whereas others are tragicomic, ambiguous or downright confusing.

Since setting up in 2000 - for what was supposed to be a weekend commission celebrating the new millennium - Jan, Chris and their mobile gallery have travelled thousands of miles and exhibited in numerous locations nationally and internationally, from high streets to contemporary art galleries. Equally at home exhibiting in an Asda car park in Liverpool or Paul Smith Space, Tokyo, the artists delight in sharing images from their burgeoning archive with the most diverse audience imaginable.

People’s enthusiastic response inspired The Caravan Gallery’s participatory Pride of Place Projects where local communities are invited to contribute place-related artwork and ephemera in any medium to create dynamic evolving exhibitions-cum-alternative information centres. They have since completed around 25 such projects – everywhere from Lithuania to the Black Country - in partnership with arts and cultural organisations.

Jan and Chris, who are based at Art Space Portsmouth, won a 2024 Marsh Award for Excellence in Visual Arts Engagement and are planning a major retrospective of their work. The Caravan Gallery has published an extensive range of books, ‘reality postcards’ and merchandise.
The Hyman Collection is the most significant private collection in the world of works by The Caravan Gallery.
